Navigating the site
There are many ways to find the information you are searching for:
Navigation
On the left hand side of each page you will find the navigation for the section you are currently in. Another important navigational aid is the breadcrumb trail near the top of the page. An example is given below:
Home > Environment & planning > Up your street > Graffiti and fly posting
This shows you where the section you are currently in is located within the site structure and is an easy way to go back to higher levels to find navigation to similiar types of information.
To improve accessibility, users who use audio aids such as screenreaders will not hear the '>' read out. Also, users who are unable to use mice will be able to tab through the breadcrumb trail.
Searching
On each page is a simple search box where you can enter search words to find the information you're seeking. The search can be used for single words or phrases - use quotation marks to search for phrases. For instance, "Five Estates" will find the Five Estates programme faster than entering Five Estates which may return search results for pages with just the words 'five' and 'estates' in them.
On the Search page is a further option to restrict your search to a specific part of the site. This drop-down menu shows the different parts of the site and when you choose to search on just one will only return search results from that section.
A-Z of services
The A-Z of services navigation uses generic terms such as 'education', 'special needs' and 'open spaces' to direct you to the relevant page.
Useful links and link groups in the right hand column
We often put links to external websites that we think might lead you to more information about a particular topic on the page where that information is displayed.
Browser compatibility
The site has been built to be viewed through all graphical browsers including the following:
Internet Explorer 5 and newer
Opera
Mozilla Firefox
Netscape
Safari
The site will work in all other browsers with minor layout changes which won't affect the usability of the site.
