Blocked emails

Has an email that you sent to us been blocked?

There are a number of reasons why this may have happened. You can tell more by looking at the "email blocked" message you have received.

Refusal reasons

550 Rule imposed mailbox access for {Recipient} refused

Your email address may be in the Council's Global Blacklist. Please contact the Corporate Information Security Compliance Manager to find out why your email address is being blocked.

550 Rule imposed mailbox access for {Recipient} refused: user invalid

Your email is addressed to a non-existent email address. If you are trying to contact a known Greenwich Council email address, please call the Switchboard on 020 8854 8888 and ask to speak to the relevant individual / team.

550 Rule imposed mailbox access for {Recipient} refused

The email you are attempting to send is larger than the Council will normally allow to enter it's email system. You may need to send your email to the relevant person or team via an alternate means, for example burn the data to a CD and arrange delivery.

Anti-spam databases

The Council employs two anti-spam databases

You might therefore receive one of the following messages:

550 Rule imposed as {Sender} [IP Address = {SenderIP}]  is blacklisted on SpamCop

Your IP address has been listed in the SpamCop anti-spam database.

550 Rule imposed as {Sender} [IP Address = {SenderIP}] is blacklisted on SpamHaus

Your IP address has been listed within the SpamHaus anti-spam database.

550 Message rejected because it matches a pattern associated with SPAM

The email you have sent appears to match a pattern associated with SPAM emails.

What does that mean?

Your IP address is a unique number (e.g. 70.84.29.148) that's assigned to your computer. It's your computer's identity on the internet - every computer connected to the internet is assigned at least one.

Anti-spam databases list IP addresses that have been reported for sending unwanted bulk emails. These emails are referred to as "spam".

What can I do?

You will need to contact your System Administrator or your Internet Service Provider and ask for your IP address to be removed from the spam databases.
