Guidelines

The Web Accessibility Initiative offers a set of AA guidelines. We have followed these guidelines to ensure that the code and content of our site is as accessible as possible. This is done by:

  • maintaining a standard layout and navigation structure throughout our main website

  • using headings, paragraphs, lists and other HTML (HyperText Markup Language) to create a logical document structure. This is so that you know where you are when listening to our site through a screen reader

  • allowing visitors to resize all text
    using their browser settings

Find out how to resize text on this site

  • using plain backgrounds to improve the readability of all text

  • using foreground and background colour combinations which have sufficient contrast and are not known to cause problems to those with visual impairments

Find out about changing the contrast of this website

  • providing alternative colour combination settings

  • using alt attributes and/or titles on all images where appropriate, and ensuring that all alt and title attributes are meaningful

  • designing layouts to work properly over a range of screen resolutions and browsers

  • ensuring all hyperlinks use descriptive and meaningful text such as avoiding short-hand language like 'Click here', ‘More’ and ‘Info’

  • providing internal anchors for visitors using screen readers or similar technology

  • always providing an alternative to scripts or other controls which rely on client device capability

  • using plain English

  • using a written style that is straightforward and understandable

  • we avoid the use of tables for layout as this makes life difficult for some screen readers

  • we use style sheets, which allow you more customisation.

Automatic accessibilty checkers

Due to the technology we use for this website, some automatic accessibility checkers may fail our site for not meeting the requirements of 'XHTML STRICT'. However, true accessibility focuses on whether real people can access all areas of the website rather than having 100 per cent clean html mark-up.

The guidelines above ensure that the code and content is as accessible as possible.
