Lying on the prime meridian, longitude zero, Greenwich is internationally famous for being the centre of world time.

The borough has a population of approximately 228,100 people and the longest stretch of riverfront in London. It boasts some of London’s most ambitious regeneration schemes. These include the area around The O2 (formerly known as the Dome) on the Greenwich Peninsula and exciting new developments at the Royal Arsenal, Woolwich. It is home to a culturally diverse community speaking a large number of different languages.

About Greenwich Council

Greenwich borough covers an area of more than 5,000 hectares from Greenwich, Blackheath, Charlton, Woolwich and Thamesmead in the north, to Kidbrooke and Eltham in the south.

The Council is responsible for a wide range of services including education, social services, refuse collection, parks, highways, planning and housing. We offer financial advice and can assist people in making claims for benefits and grants.

The Council also has a community leadership role in promoting the borough’s interests in terms of its economic, social and environmental development.

A group of Councillors manage the Council at a political level. They represent different areas – called wards – within the borough. Elections for Councillors take place every four years and Councillors hold weekly advice surgeries in their area.

If you do not speak English and you need to talk to us about our services, we can help. You will find a language line facility available in the reception areas of a number of Council buildings. This will give you access to an interpreter.

Take look at the list of Council buildings to find out where this facility is available.
