Safeguarding your personal information
The Council is improving services for its customers. We will soon be opening new centres that will offer you a wide range of services under one roof.
We are also updating our computerised customer records. This means that you won’t have to repeat your personal details each time you contact the Council.
How will this be done?
Our Council Tax database contains names and addresses for all homes in the borough. We now plan to copy this information into our new customer services database. Only the name and the property address will be used to update our customer records.
All Council Tax customers were informed about this plan in the annual booklet called Your Council Tax Explained which accompanied the 2007 to 2008 Council Tax bills.
What will this mean?
The main benefit for you is that you won’t have to repeat your personal details each time that you contact the Council. The information that we collect will only be used for the delivery of Council services.
It may be that the next time you call the Council, you are asked to confirm that the information on our database is correct.
Keeping your data secure
The Council will endeavour to keep your information accurate and up to date. We will keep your data secure, and will protect your rights under the Data Protection Act 1998.
We will not store information about you for any longer than necessary. We will not pass your information to third parties for marketing purposes, or for any other reason (except when we have a legal duty to pass information – for example, to help the police investigate fraud).
Each year, the Council confirms with the Information Commissioner the nature of the data we hold and the purpose for which it is held. The Information Commissioner's job is to make sure that organisations use personal data properly and only for the purposes for which it is collected.
