Safety checks

The most important thing to do after all the standing water is removed from your property is to have your gas, water and electricity supplies and appliances checked and, if necessary, repaired by a qualified engineer.

Electricity

  • Turn off the electricity supply and do not reconnect it until the system has been thoroughly examined by a qualified electrician.

  • Check sockets, switches and appliances before use.  Even if it is considered safe to use electrical equipment in the cleaning process, make sure there is a circuit breaker for additional protection.

  • Generators, available from hire shops, can supply temporary electricity. Always ensure that there is adequate ventilation as generators produce toxic carbon monoxide.  Always let the engine cool before re-fuelling as this will reduce the risk of fire and explosion.

Gas

  • Turn off the gas supply to appliances that have been flooded and get the system checked by a CORGI registered engineer.

Security

  • While it is important to ventilate your property, all your windows and exterior doors must be locked and secured when unoccupied. If necessary, cover open or broken windows with security mesh.  You can also obtain security advice from DIY stores.
