The separation process

Ever wondered what happens to all the stuff we collect from your blue-top bin? Where does it all go? How do we separate all that mixed-up material?

Learn all about it in this section.

Transported to Nathan Way

We collect your mixed dry recycling material every week and take it the Materials Recycling Facility or MRF. This is located next to the Reuse and Recycling Centre at Nathan Way, Thamesmead.

Clever machines

The MRF is a huge building, like a warehouse, with lots of hi-tech equipment. The clever machines separate and sort the mixed recycling material into bales of one type of material each.

These single-material bales that emerge would then be ready for recycling by other parties.
