Greenwich sorts and separates all its mixed dry recycling material within the borough, at the Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) in Nathan Way.
The MRF in Greenwich is the most up-to-date in the entire country!
In 2006/07, Greenwich recycled and composted 24,600 tonnes of household waste. This is over 23.5 per cent of all household waste.
Cans, cardboard, paper, plastic and glass make up about 42 per cent of your household waste.
About 35 per cent of the household waste you produce is from the kitchen or garden.
Over 91 per cent of Greenwich residents are participating in the kerbside mixed dry recycling scheme.
The MRF cost £8 million to build. The Council built it in partnership with Veolia Environmental Services.
Greenwich Council offices take part in the same mixed dry recycling scheme as residents – we practise what we preach.
The garden and food waste collection service was introduced in 2008. The Council is expecting this new service to divert 17,000 tonnes of waste from incineration to composting.
