Where should I put...?

Here is list of common waste items and where you should put them under the doorstep collection scheme.

Pet excrement

Dog and cat waste should be bagged and placed in your black sack.

Excrement and waste from small pets (which are fed on a vegetable diet) can go in the food and garden waste bin (green-top bin). The hay, straw and sawdust from the cage can also go in the green-top bin.

Examples of small pets include rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters.

Vacuum cleaner waste

Black sack.

Sanitary towels and incontinence pads

Sanitary towels should go in your black sack. If you have previously put incontinence pads in your general waste, these should also go in your black sack. You may want to put them in a sealed bag first.

Polystyrene

Black sack. You CANNOT recycle polystyrene.

Coal and wood embers

You must place all remains from your open fire into your black sack. Please ensure that embers are completely cold before placing them in the sack.

Cigarette ends and ashtray contents

Black sack. Ensure that the cigarette is completely extinguished before putting it in the sack.

Cotton wool pads/buds and make-up wipes

Black sack.

Broken crockery

Black sack. Wrap it in paper first to avoid injury.

Coat hangers

Black sack. DO NOT try to recycle them as coat hangers - particularly wire ones with rounded heads - can get jammed in the sorting equipment and cause major damage and disruption to the processing plant.

'Tetra Paks'

'Tetra Pak' is a brand name for waxed food and beverage cartons. These are commonly used for fruit juices, milk and soup.

You CANNOT recycle waxed cartons so they need to either go into the black sack, OR:

Recycle them at these special recycling banks:

  • Sainsbury's – Greenwich Peninsula
  • Asda – Bugsby Way, Charlton
  • Sainsbury's – Eltham
  • Morrison's – Thamesmead
  • Plumstead Common – Opposite the Co-Op
