Woolwich Squares International Design Competition

The Council and its partners have launched a competition to appoint a team to re-design General Gordon Square and Beresford Square in Woolwich Town Centre. The re-design will play a key part in linking Woolwich Town Centre to the riverside developments to the north and Woolwich Common to the south.

High profile project

The team will need to be of sound financial standing and have considerable skills and experience in:

  • hard and soft landscape design
  • environmental sustainability and sustainable design and construction
  • strategy development and project implementation
  • community consultation and facilitation
  • landscape and town centre mangement
  • town and transport planning.
This high profile project is at the heart of the change and renewal in Woolwich. It will form part of the Mayor's 100 Public Squares Programme.

Quantity surveying services

The Council and its partners are also seeking to appoint a quantity surveying consultant for this project.

Expression of interest

Design teams and/or quantity surveying consultants were invited to register their interest with the Council before 19 September 2007.

Tenders are being assessed. The Council expects to make the appointments in the summer of 2008.

Competition sponsors

The competition is sponsored by Greenwich Council with the Woolwich Regeneration Agency, Design for London and Transport for London. Urban Practitioners, a regeneration consultancy, will be providing support for the competition.

Regeneration in Woolwich

The massive regeneration in Woolwich will bring about changes in the Town Centre, such as the:

  • re-development of the Royal Arsenal and Love Lane sites
  • extension of the Docklands Light Railway
  • introduction of Greenwich Waterfront Transit
  • construction of a Crossrail station.
The transport infrastructure will provide high-speed connections to the Docklands, the City and the West End. Their introduction will help transform the area. This includes the construction of:

  • thousands of new homes
  • new Council offices
  • a major new supermarket
  • a range of new retail and leisure facilities.
