Why improve the transport system?

To provide access to jobs for the most disadvantaged citizens, it is essential that we improve our public transport. Better transport links are also important for supporting new business development opportunities.

Our aims

The Council and it partners aim to provide and lobby for a transport system that:

  • is accessible and affordable by all
  • is reliable, efficient and of high quality
  • is sustainable
  • pays due regard to environmental impacts
  • meets the needs of people and businesses within the borough
  • integrates well with London-wide and national networks
  • promotes accessibility to services and facilities (rather than just for mobility)
  • is safem well maintained and well managed
  • is an integral part of the public realm.

Biggest improvement yet

Spanning road, rail and river development, our current transport improvement is the biggest since the 1830s. Three key ideas drive the improvement:

  • sustainable travel
  • improvements to road safety
  • action to improve air quality.

Easing traffic congestion

We are also looking at ways to tackle traffic growth in Greenwich. To this end we have:

  • commissioned a traffic model
  • planned to look into road pricing
  • held a public attitude conference
  • promoted green travel plans and encouraged the use of other (non-car) modes of transport through events such as the Car Free Day
  • worked with Transport for London to help people with learning disabilities get better access to buses
The project with Transport for London has received an award and is now being replicated elsewhere in the country.

In addition, 46 schools in the borough have developed School Travel Plans approved by the Department for Transport and Department for Education and Skills since 2000.

Ongoing process

Through our scrutiny function, we hold annual conferences with interested individuals, community and pressure groups and transport providers to inform the development of transport strategies and plans.
