Thames Gateway Bridge Effects on Residents
What effects will the regeneration of the Thames Gateway Bridge have on the residents of Greenwich?
Increased job opportunities
The bridge will vastly increase local residents' access to job opportunities in the wider Thames Gateway region while improving public transport services in the area.
Toll system
The bridge will have a system of tolls that provide significant discounts for residents who use the bridge, yet deter long-distance, heavy goods traffic.
Bus lanes
There will also be separate bus lanes for non-car users.
Concerns addressed
Damage to Oxleas Wood - current plans avoid the problems in a previous proposal which would have caused considerable environmental damage to the Oxleas Woods area while cutting a swathe through Plumstead
Woolwich Ferry - the plans do not directly affect the ferry service as separate legislation would be required to close the ferry
Long-term plans
The plans, announced on 9 January 2004 by the Department of Transport and Mayor of London, support the Council's long-term regeneration plans in which better transport links and improved public transport play a vital role.
The Council will continue to work closely with partners, including the Thames Gateway London Partnership, to make sure local people benefit from the new transport link, while protecting the environment.
