Transport for London (TfL) is planning to run a bus based rapid transit system – Greenwich Waterfront Transit – between Abbey Wood and Greenwich town centre via Woolwich and North Greenwich (the O2).
Phase 1
Following public consultations in 2004 and 2005, Greenwich Council has approved in principle Phase 1 of the route:
- a main route between Abbey Wood station and Woolwich
- an interim route running on existing roads to North Greenwich.
Parts of the infrastructure for the route are still subject to public consultation and detailed design approvals by the Council.
Improved service
Much of the route will benefit from new dedicated bus lanes and priority over general traffic.
Passengers will experience an improvement in bus travel with the Greenwich Waterfront Transit:
- faster, more frequent and more reliable service
- new bus shelters
- well-lit waiting areas
- better service information.
The service will interchange with London Underground, DLR and National Rail.
What happens next?
Transport for London submitted their planning application for Greenwich Waterfront Transit Phase 1 on 2 December 2008. This will now undergo the normal determination process.
Once the application has been registered it will be available to view here. It will also be available in local libraries and at the Planning Counter in Peggy Middleton House.
If permission is given for the project then TfL will start work on the scheme in 2009. Phase 1 would be scheduled by TfL to become operational in 2011.
