Children And Families

In the 2001-05 neighbourhood renewal programme, the Children And Families theme played an important part in speeding up the development of integrated family health and social services. We will build on this in the 2006-08 programme.

Key priorities

Our main areas of focus are:

  • improved support for young people and families in crisis to reduce the number of children being taken into care

  • continuing capacity support for the Children's Trust

  • supporting schools and private and voluntary sector organisations to improve the overall quality of teaching and learning experiences for children.

Kinship care project

This project places children in the home of a member of kin, rather than having them taken into the local authority care system.

Kinship care promotes strong relationships and helps to maintain and enhance self esteem. It has been shown to improve educational achievement and lead to positive behaviour.

Between 2004 and 2006, we made 55 referrals, completed 45 assessments and arranged for 27 children to be supported by their kin.
