Several projects are under way to spruce up Woolwich Town Centre, adding new housing, retail space, Council service centre and landscaped squares.
Love Lane development
This site sits between Wellington Street and Woolwich New Road.
A new Civic Centre is being fronted onto Wellington Street, to replace the former Peggy Middleton House and several other smaller Council buildings.
Council services
The new centre will provide accommodation for the majority of Council services as well as:
- a new library
- post office
- and cafe or bar.
Completion is expected in 2011.
Superstore and new homes
The rest of the site will also be re-developed to include:
- a new Tesco superstore
- a new town centre car park
- and 1,000 new homes.
Planning permission was granted earlier in 2009 for the Tesco development. However, a further application is anticipated.
Woolwich Triangle
Plans for this project will involve the re-development of the area at the western end of Powis Street in Woolwich Town Centre. This will include:
- 300,000 square feet of new retail
- a 400-lot town centre car park
- a 98-bed hotel
- and 100 homes.
A planning application is expected in late 2008 with completion of the scheme due late 2011.
Woolwich Squares
General Gordon Square and Beresford Square in Woolwich town centre are set to be transformed as part of the Council's ongoing programme of major regeneration in the town.
On 15 December 2009, councillors approved the £6.6million redesign. Woolwich market will remain open throughout the construction.
Competition winner
A design team led by landscape architect Gustafson Porter has been picked to work on this project, following the Woolwich Squares International Design Competition.
Redevelopment work is expected to be completed by 2011.
New features
The new designs will include:
- a new water feature suitable for children’s play
- new access routes across the squares to key locations including DLR & rail stations
- new trees and shrubs
- new terraces and seating
- new lighting to enhance the settings of the Woolwich Equitable and Royal Arsenal Gatehouse buildings
- new stalls and layout for Woolwich market
- new paving around the squares to complement the recent TfL improvements
- new high quality paving and new lighting on Greens End, which links the two squares
- technological features for public events
