Here is a quick round-up of the present state of and future plans for the regeneration of Woolwich.
What's happened so far
- Works have started on the DLR extension which opens in 2009.
- New shops have moved into Woolwich town centre.
- A thousand new home have been developed on the Royal Arsenal.
- Residents are being consulted on proposals to re-develop a thousand Council homes.
- We have formed a partnership to bring in further funding and coordinate the regeneration of the area.
The proposals
- Major private sector investment in Woolwich town centre, creating 46,450 square metres (11.5 acres) of new retail floor space, 1,500 new homes and over 1,000 new jobs in the next five years.
- A further 2,700 homes, shops and leisure areas on the Royal Arsenal.
- A rapid bus-based transit system linking Abbey Wood, Thamesmead, Woolwich, the Peninsula and Greenwich by 2010.
- Improvements to open spaces.
- Potential Crossrail stations at Woolwich and Abbey Wood.
- New and improved schools, Children's centres, health and community facilities.
- Reduction in the severance caused by the A206 and A205 roads between the Royal Arsenal and the town centre.
