New Haddo

The New Haddo Estate is a £13million Council-led development. It will provide a combination of affordable housing and commercial space.

The development will be completed by 2008. Of the 510 new homes that will be built, 53% will be affordable homes for rent and shared ownership.

The Greater London Authority and the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment have both commended the scheme for its innovation and high quality urban design.

Affordable housing

The New Haddo scheme will provide increased levels of affordable accommodation, combining rented homes with private dwellings and shared ownership accommodation.

The 510 new homes will be formed of:

  • 469 flats
  • 41 maisonettes and houses
These will be divided into:

  • 169 will be for social rented accommodation
  • 85 for shared ownership
  • 256 for private sale.
Ten houses and two flats have been specifically designed as affordable homes for wheelchair users.

Among the benefits will be 1.5 acres of open space while a number of blocks will have internal courtyard gardens for residents. Land will be used to bring considerable community improvements to the area.

Commercial space

The planned development of New Haddo makes provision for a community centre for residents and neighbouring estates, together with eight commercial units for retail use, offices and a GP surgery.

One of the retail sites has already been allocated as a cafe / restaurant with hopes that one of the spaces will be used as a creche.
