East Greenwich

A scheme that will transform the former Greenwich District Hospital site to provide state-of-the-art leisure facilities, a new library and health centre was approved by Greenwich Council’s Planning Board on Thursday, 28 August 2008.
Planning approval follows extensive public consultation. Work on the development could start as early as 2009, which would mean completion in 2011.

Heart of East Greenwich scheme

The new building, to be called Greenwich Centre will provide:

  • two new swimming pools
  • a fitness centre
  • spa
  • library
  • crèche
  • council service centre for all council-related enquiries
  • and health care centre including two doctor’s surgeries.
The facilities are to be developed by Greenwich Council.

New homes

Greenwich Centre will be at the centre of the new Heart of East Greenwich development scheme.

  • The scheme will provide a new community of 645 homes.

  • At least 35 per cent of these will be affordable.

Better service for residents

As part of Greenwich Council’s ambitious modernisation programme, the Council is investing millions in new and improved public services.

The development of three local service centres in Eltham, Woolwich and Greenwich is at the heart of the programme to provide a range of modern, first class services.

The Eltham Centre opened in November 2007, and the Woolwich Centre is currently under construction and will open in 2011.

Environmental focus

New green technologies will be used on the development, such as on-site generation of heat and power. This uses a combined heat and power (CHP) plant, which will be powered by bio-mass burners using wood waste as fuel.

Parking for 190 cars will be provided under-ground, with 65 spaces on the new internal street.

To encourage alternatives to car use, we will provide for 921 cycle spaces and 24 motorcycle spaces.

There will also be an on-site car club with eight designated parking spaces.

Communal areas and open spaces

Public open spaces including a vibrant square with restaurants and shops are incorporated in the design, along with landscaped areas, communal gardens and children’s play areas.  The scheme will also provide a microbrewery and start-up units for new businesses.
