Applying and appealing

Anyone can make a planning application, regardless of who owns the land or buildings concerned. If you are not the owner or not wholly the owner, you have to inform the owner or co-owners.

You can appoint an agent like a solicitor, builder or architect to make an application on your behalf.

Your application

See our step-by-step guide guide for details on applying.

From 6 April 2008, standardised planning application forms are being used across England.
It is easy to submit an application online using the Planning Portal.

Alternatively, if you prefer to send your application by post and know which forms you need, you can download them using the link below.

How much does it cost?

The fees are the same nationwide and depend on the type and extent of the works - to apply for planning permission to do alterations to a house is a little more than £135.

The Planning Portal's fee calculator can help you with finding out how much your application will cost.

Appeals

If you are unhappy about any aspect of how your application was handled, or the outcome, you are entitled to make an appeal.
