How to apply for planning permission

Anyone can make a planning application, regardless of who owns the land or buildings concerned. If you are not the owner or not wholly the owner, you have to inform the owner or co-owners.

You can appoint an agent like a solicitor, builder or architect to make an application on your behalf.

Your application

See our step-by-step guide for details on applying.

Standardised planning application forms are now being used across England. It is easy to submit an application online.

How much does it cost?

The fees are the same nationwide and depend on the type and extent of the works. To apply for planning permission to do alterations to a house costs £170.

The Planning Portal's fee calculator can help you estimate how much your application will cost.

You can also find full details of fees by downloading the documents on the Planning Portal's planning costs information page.
