Planning permission and applications
Quick guide
You are responsible for making sure you get permission, if it is needed, for all building or works you put into action. If you don't own your property, talk to the landlord before pursuing planning permission.
Talk to your neighbours, they will be affected by your plans and deserve to know what's in store. It may prevent bad tempers or resistance to the application.
Do I need planning permission?
For information on whether you need planning permission and how to apply, see our guides (left).
There is also a leaflet - Planning: A Guide for Householders –available from the Department for Communities and Local Governments (DCLG).
Planning: A Guide for Householders on the DCLG website
Conservation areas and listed buildings
If you live in a conservation area, a listed building or any of the Article 4 Direction areas, stricter regulations will apply. In fact it is best to assume you have to apply for most works. Visit the
conservation section
for details.
Works without permission
If you've done works without permission, contact us and apply for a lawful development certificate.
