Conservation area appraisals

The Council uses conservation area appraisals to explain the architecture and history of the conservation area concerned and what makes it special.

Original character

The appraisals help to encourage good design and repair methods that are sympathetic to the original architectural style and features of the building.

They will also help the Council determine planning applications for external alterations with the aim of maintaining and restoring the original character of the area.

The Council is producing conservation area appraisals for most of the borough's 20 conservation areas.

Public consultation

Approved drafts of the appraisals are available for public consultation before adoption.

There are no appraisals for consultation at the moment.

However, you can view previous draft appraisals for which consultations have closed.

Adopted appraisals

The final version of the appraisals will be background documents supporting the Local Development Framework that forms adopted planning policy.

The Council will also produce a detailed guide to the types of changes that can be made in each conservation area.

You can browse the adopted appraisals by selecting the conservation area from the links on your left.
