Helping you understand the law

All building regulations are made in terms of the Building Act of 1984.

Regulations

Most of the actual building regulations are presented as performance standards. A number of documents have been issued to help builders reach these standards, and to provide guidance on ways to comply with the requirements.

These approved documents are available from the Planning Portal website.

Guidance

The Department for Communities and Local Governments provides an explanatory booklet that is a useful introduction to building regulations in England and Wales for anyone intending to carry out building works.

This information will help you understand the law and prepare your building proposals. If you have any problems you should contact Greenwich Building Control via the contact details on the right of this page.
