New licensing act: guide for residents
The new licensing act came into force in November 2005. It gives local authorities responsibility for licensing the pubs, clubs and restaurants in their borough. This means Greenwich Council decides whether your local bar can open until 1am, not the magistrates' court.
More power for local people
The act also gives residents more power - if you live nearby you have the right to object to licence applications, appeal decisions and ask for reviews of any licences in place.
In this section, you can:
View licence applications
New and variations to existing licences
Find out
how to object to an application
From writing in to attending a hearing
View decisions
made on applications
And find out how to appeal if you disagree
Find out how to
request a review of an existing licence
What type of businesses are affected?
Businesses that:
sell alcohol, such as pubs, clubs and off licences
provide entertainment, such as theatres and cinemas
sell food after 11pm
All night drinking update
Only 1,000 premises in England and Wales have 24 hour licences. Thousands have extended their opening times by just one or two hours.
