The residents' guide

The new Licensing Act came into force in November 2005. It gives local authorities responsibility for licensing the pubs, clubs and restaurants in their borough. This means Greenwich Council decides whether your local bar can open until 1am, not the magistrates' court.

More power for local people

The act also gives residents more power - if you live nearby you have the right to object to licence applications, appeal decisions and ask for reviews of any licences in place.

In this section, you can:

What type of businesses are affected?

Businesses that:

  • sell alcohol, such as pubs, clubs and off-licences
  • provide entertainment, such as theatres and cinemas
  • sell food after 11pm

All-night drinking update

The latest figures (April 2008) from the DCMS (Department for Culture, Media and Sport) show that there are 6,338 24-hour licenced premises nationwide. The borough of Greenwich currently has 22 such premises.
