Recycling and waste management

Green bottleWhen we drink a can of soft drink, or use a plastic bag, we do not normally think of it as wasting energy.

The fact is, everything we use needs energy to produce. Energy is needed to extract and process the raw materials, to assemble the parts and to transport the final product to you.

What you can do

By reusing or recycling our waste, we help to reduce the need to manufacture from scratch. This saves energy and reduces greenhouse gas emissions. You can do your part by:

  • avoiding disposables where possible (eg bring your own reusable carrier bag for your supermarket shopping)
  • recycle.

What the Council is doing

Our Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) can automatically separate different types of recycling material.

This means that residents will not have to separate common recycling material before putting it out for collection.

Learn about the Materials Recycling Facility.

We also provide a Reuse and Recycling Centre, which takes in a wide range of waste items to be recycled, or repaired, refurbished and resold.

Recycled glass for paving roads

The Council has encouraged paving contractor Beach Ringway to use ground recycled glass as a substitute for paving schemes.

Skilled Mason Paviours working on the job have pronounced the new material superior to sand to work with. It is kinder to the environment as well.
