Greener Greenwich
Green projects around the borough
Solar powered pedestrian refuges
New pedestrian refuges that the Council provides will all be carbon neutral.
In the past such refuges would have required lighted bollards powered by mains electricity.
Solar power
Carbon-free solar panels will power the lights and "keep left" arrows on the new refuges. The bollards themselves are of the high visibility reflector type.
Advantages of using the new pedestrian refuges:
they are environmentally friendly
they are cheaper to build
no messy trenches need to be dug across our roads.
Lewisham Road example
Here is just one example of the pedestrian refuge in Lewisham Road, Greenwich, where there are four bollards in a row. Others are popping up across the borough, as and when needed.
