Greener Greenwich
Green projects around the borough
Promoting greener transport
Greenwich is at the heart of the Thames Gateway where former industrial areas are being transformed to create thousands of new homes, new businesses, parks and an improved environment.
The Council has implemented measures to help reduce traffic congestion and carbon dioxide emissions in these developing areas.
Working with developers
The Council is working with developers to ensure that:
all new large housing and commercial developments are designed to meet excellent environmental standards
maximise the potential for sustainable forms of travel.
Green and safe transport
When granting permission for new developments, the Council looks to encourage developers to:
provide local amenities within walking distance where possible
ensure there are good links to public transport
provide high quality walking routes
provide secure cycle parking and cycle routes
promote car clubs
install safe crossing facilities for pedestrians on busy roads
Travel plans
The Council also requires developers to submit a travel plan which sets out how the developers will use and promote sustainable methods of transport.
