Energy efficiency and Decent Homes

A newly renovated building on Ravens Way for former residents of the Ferrier estate uses a groundbreaking heat and power system, aimed at cutting bills and reducing carbon dioxide emissions.

The building comprises of thirty refurbished homes and four brand new key-worker flats.

All of the properties exceed the Decent Homes standard.

Unique heating system

Natural gas, rather than fossil fuels, is burned in a conventional internal combustion engine and attached to the drive shaft in an electrical generator.

The exhaust from the engine is used to provide hot gasses that in turn are used to provide low pressure hot water suitable for heating or washing.

Although the technology has been used in other buildings, this is the first time it has been used in this way in a small development in Greenwich.

Funding

The £2.9 million makeover has been funded by the Regional Housing Pot with investment from the Council and Tower Homes.

The Council successfully bid for funding from the London Housing Board’s recommended funding stream for Local Authority Regeneration schemes in 2004, securing almost £2 million towards the renovation work.
