Green projects around the borough
Insulation scheme for 1,400 homes
Council flats in Greenwich are being made warmer and more energy efficient thanks to funding close to a million pounds. The work will go on until March 2011.
This follows a successful bid by Greenwich Council to the Homes and Communities Agency for funding to provide cavity wall insulation. A total of 1,446 homes, in blocks that have cavity walls, will benefit from the £938,100 award.
Energy efficiency
Cavity wall insulation is one of the cheapest and best ways to achieve energy efficiency, especially in houses and low-rise blocks, and almost all such council homes in the borough have it.
The new funding will enable the Council to extend these insulation measures to include higher blocks.
Reducing fuel bills
As well as making flats warmer, the insulation will create average savings for tenants of £53 a year on fuel bills.
Where possible the Council is tying in the work with the Decent Homes programme to use the same scaffolding to reduce costs and minimise disruption for tenants.
