Greener Greenwich
Green projects around the borough
Success story: Europa Quality Print
Europa Quality Print Ltd moved into the IO Centre in Armstrong Road, on the Royal Arsenal, Woolwich, in April 2006.
Green awards
Thanks to support from the Greenwich Energy Efficiency Advice the company has won the national Green Mark Level 1 accreditation and the Green Apple award.
The business, which started up in l993, now has 22 staff.
Managing Director Kevin Ibrahim said, "We have experienced year-on-year growth – and moving into Greenwich borough is the best thing I’ve done in 15 years!"
Recycling waste paper
Like printers up and down the country, the firm has always recycled its waste paper and card.
Sales Director Bob Dine said, “People have always come to collect it, along with our printing plates and our used chemicals.
"We were doing it before it became fashionable!
"We simply couldn’t afford to just throw it away."
Paper offcuts are also used for the fax-machine.
Energy saving technologies
In addition, the company has recently:
bought a state-of-the-art digital plate-maker which does not need chemicals
and installed the latest evaporative cooling system for the building instead of air-conditioning.
Sleep mode and low energy lamps
On a smaller note, Kevin said, "All our equipment is on ‘sleep mode’ so it automatically switches itself off at night."
The advice centre assessors also praised the company for its fluorescent lighting tubes which use around one quarter of the energy of a tungsten filament lamp – and last up to 15 times longer.
Example for other businesses
Cllr Sidhu, the cabinet member for Greener Greenwich, commented, "This company has looked into everything from recycling right through to their equipment and the way they use it – especially the new plate-maker.
"We need to encourage other businesses to follow a similar model."
