Combined heat and power
At two tower blocks in Glyndon Road and Raglan Road, Combined Heat and Power (CHP) systems have been installed.
The systems generate heat to supply hot water to:
the two blocks
Elmley Street tower block
flats and maisonettes at The Firs, The Limes, The Willow and The Redwoods.
Affordable heating
The CHP systems were installed in 1997 with the main objective of delivering affordable heating to around 360 homes.
How it works
The plant uses a gas-fired engine to drive a generator. The generator produces heat in much the same way as a car engine.
The heat is used to provide hot water to the homes. The water is distributed from a central source.
The system supplies enough heat to meet summer hot water loads. During winter months, the remaining heating load is met using top-up boilers.
Electricity generated by the plant is used for communal lighting system, and any excess is sold back to the national grid.
