Insulation for elderly home owners

Some of the borough’s owner-occupiers aged 60 and over could be getting help to insulate their property in 2008. The Council has identified an area in Abbey Wood and will contact eligible residents.

Thames Gateway grant

The Council has secured a £50,000 grant from Thames Gateway London Partnership (TGLP) to carry out work in the borough, with the aim of bringing down residents’ fuel bills and helping to save energy by ensuring lofts and cavity walls are properly insulated.

Addresses targeted will be owner-occupied properties with residents aged over 60. Residents that have qualified for the scheme are set to be contacted by the Council early in 2008.

The Council selected the area based on a thermal survey and on findings in its work with the Greenwich Teaching Primary Care Trust to identify areas of need.

Thermal survey

Greenwich Council has been one of the first to commission a special aerial survey to look at heat loss in every residential area of the borough. The new technology highlights hotspot areas that are wasting energy through heat loss, so that the Council can target insulation work more effectively.

Warmer and safer Council homes

Council tenants are getting warmer and safer houses and flats through the government’s Decent Homes programme of improvements which is due to finish in 2010.

Greenwich Eco Home

A further £50,000 grant from TGLP is enabling Greenwich Council to create an 'Eco Home' in Plumstead, due to be opened in 2008.

A show house, which will be open for tours by schools and residents’ groups, will feature energy efficiency best practice on a wide range of measures based on sustainable construction methods, as well as solar panels, and wind turbine technology.

Excellent scheme

Councillor Rajwant Sidhu, Greenwich’s Council’s Cabinet Member for Greener Greenwich, said,

“This is an excellent scheme and will really help improve the lives of Greenwich residents. Houses that are properly insulated can really make a difference in keeping homes warmer, reducing bills and saving energy.

“The Council will continue to address the key issues around saving energy and improving the environment for the benefit of local people, and this latest scheme is another example of our commitment.”
