Housing energy objectives

Greenwich Council is committed to providing effective and efficient energy provision in the Borough and is working towards the following objectives:

  • to provide all council tenants with affordable warmth

  • to promote energy awareness to residents, councillors, staff, organisations and businesses in the Borough

  • to encourage private sector landlords and Housing Associations to achieve affordable warmth where possible in their existing homes

  • to encourage private sector developers and Housing Associations to achieve affordable warmth in all new houses

  • to encourage owner occupiers to carry out works to improve energy efficiency to their homes through an advertising campaign and the provision of grants and low cost loans

  • to encourage all residents in the Borough to better understand and action energy conservation measures.

Warmth we can afford

Living in warmer homes means fewer people suffer health problems such as respiratory infections and the risk of heart disease.

Greenwich Council is fully behind the Government's drive to get rid of fuel poverty. We hope to achieve this by working closely with local health agencies.

Our aim is that there should be no more cold, damp homes in the borough - whether rented or privately owned. Staying warm and comfortable at home should cost no more than 10% of a household's income.

Investing in insulation, better heating systems and other energy efficiency measures - with grants available for owner occupiers and private tenants on low incomes - is the best way to achieve this.

Decent Homes

In addition to the housing energy objectives, the Council is committed to meeting the Decent Homes Standard by 2010. Find out more about Decent Homes.
