Greener Greenwich
Energy efficiency
The Council’s commitment
Greenwich Council has produced a strategy targeted at the energy efficiency of housing within the borough. The Housing Energy Strategy aims to improve peoples’ lives by providing warmer housing, which is therefore cheaper to heat.
It plans to do this by reducing overall energy consumption through the improvement of energy efficiency in housing and the promotion of energy awareness to all residents in the Borough.
Improving quality of life
These reductions will impact residents by enhancing the quality of their lives, reducing energy bills of householders and tenants, as well as greenhouse gas emissions, hence improving the environment.
The Council has been committed to providing affordable warmth since September 1994 and has already done a great deal to upgrade its housing stock and to improve the heating quality for its tenants.
Nearly £50 million has been allocated to replace ill-fitting windows and a further £10 million will be spent on installing central heating systems in older properties.
What steps have we taken?
Greenwich Council works with residents and businesses to help cut energy use, and to use energy that has less impact on the environment.
We have:
invested millions of pounds installing insulation, double glazing and efficient central heating in thousands of homes
carried out an aerial survey to help pinpoint heat loss from buildings in the borough
piloted solar hot water schemes in local homes, and sun-powered systems that generate electricity
installed 150 solar hot water schemes in local homes and are piloting sun-powered systems that generate electricity.
We also buy two-thirds of our electricity from green sources, making Greenwich one of the largest users of this low emission energy among local councils in the country.
Our energy rating
As a result of our efforts, the Council's Housing Energy Rating has increased from 52 (April 2000) to 69.6 (April 2007).
