Mallet’s Mortar
Junction Repository Road, Hillreach and Artillery Place
This was the largest British mortar ever made. Manufactured in 1857, it had a calibre of 36" (914 mm).
It was constructed of iron rings, supported by longitudinal bars, to make transport, in sections, easier. It was designed for the bombardment of Sebastopol in the Crimean War, but the war had finished before the gun could be used.
