Summary of Dog Control Orders (November 2009)

Here is the easy way to understand the new Dog Control Orders.

The rules

  • Dogs are not allowed where there are 'No Dogs Allowed' signs.

  • In all other open-air public places throughout the borough, you should not have more than four dogs under your control and you are required to clean up after your dogs.

  • You need to keep your dogs on a lead unless you are in one of the Council's 'dog friendly' parks and open spaces in the borough.

  • In the 'dog friendly' parks and open spaces you may be asked to put your dog on a lead by an authorised officer.

Further details

The three areas of Dog Control Orders are explained below, with links to information about where they are enforced.

No dogs allowed

Dog walkers are not allowed to take their dog or dogs in to any area where there are 'no dogs allowed' signs.

This applies to all special activity areas and picnic areas owned, managed or maintained by the London Borough of Greenwich.

Dogs allowed off the lead

The 'dog friendly' parks and open spaces are subject to three Dog Control Orders.

  • Your dog is allowed off the lead unless an authorised officer requires you to put your dog on a lead.
  • You are required to clean up after your dog.
  • You must not have more than four dogs under your control.
Signs will be put up at entrances to our dog friendly parks and open spaces where these orders are being enforced.

Dogs on leads at all times

The rest of the borough is subject to three Dog Control Orders.

  • You are required to keep your dog on a lead at all times.
  • You are required to clean up after your dog.
  • You must not have more than four dogs under your control.
These orders apply throughout the rest of the borough.

This means that:

  • if you do not see a 'Dogs allowed off the lead' sign, you must keep your dog on a lead at all times
  • if you see a 'No dogs allowed' sign, you must not take your dog onto that area
  • you must clean up after your dog in any public place in the borough
  • you must not have more than four dogs under your control in any public place in the borough.
