The various maces, balls and chains that make up the mayoral insignia reflect the rich history of the borough and its important place in the commercial and political development of both London and Britain over the centuries.
There are three mayoral chains, one for each of the original metropolitan boroughs, Woolwich and Greenwich, which merged in 1965 to become the London Borough of Greenwich, and a third which represents the merged borough.
The mace is a symbol of authority and order. The mace is carried by the Mace Bearer in front of the Mayor into the Council Chamber and at major events.
We own two maces, one for each of the metropolitan boroughs, Greenwich and Woolwich. Following the formation of the London Borough of Greenwich, the mace of the metropolitan borough of Greenwich is now used on formal occasions.
