Who is the present Mayor?

Cllr Allan MacCarthy was elected Mayor of Greenwich on 21 May 2009.

The Deputy Mayor is Cllr Barbara Barwick.

Background

Cllr Allan MacCarthy was born in Woolwich and since the age of 10 has always lived in the Greenwich Borough.

During his career, he has worked in:

  • publishing
  • the head office of the Merchant Navy Officers
  • British Equity - specialising in small scale and commercial theatre and later working in the film and television department, responsible for dealing with the ITV companies on behalf of Equity members.
He was first elected to Greenwich Council as an Alderman in 1975, then elected to the Council representing Kidbrooke ward until 1986. He was elected again in 2006 for Charlton ward in which he has lived for 38 years.

Cllr MacCarthy is now in his 39th year of continuous community involvement.

He is the Chair of Governors at Cherry Orchard Primary School and a Governor of Sherington Primary School.

He is also a Management Committee Member of Rathmore Centre Youth Club and Board Member of Greenwich Dance Agency and of Charlton Triangle.

  • Polytechnic of Central London
  • Morley College
  • Greenwich Community College
  • and University of Keele.

Cllr MacCarthy has served on many Council committees, including:

  • Chair of Planning and Development Committee
  • Leisure Services Committee 
  • Children and Young People's Panel
  • Social Inclusion Scrutiny Panel
  • Best Value Team considering Olympics and Emergency Planning and Resilience.
He was Deputy Mayor in 2008/09.

This year's mayoral charities are MacMillan Cancer Support, Volunteer Centre Greenwich and Greenwich Mencap.
