Local sporting hero John Regis - the UK record holder for the 200m - joined Council Leader, Chris Roberts; Mayor of Greenwich, Cllr Sajid Jawaid and MP for Eltham, Clive Efford to officially open the Council’s new Eltham Centre on Monday 3 March.
The event brought together guests from local community organisations and user groups, councillors, Council partners and representatives from the companies that helped to design and build the new centre.
A plaque and specially commissioned artwork of the centre, by local artist Peter Kent, was unveiled. John Regis then joined Chris Roberts, Clive Efford and the Mayor on a tour of the centre.
First stop was the newly refurbished library, where they joined the pupils from Eltham C of E in the Children’s Library for a special story time.
Sports facilities
As an athlete, John was particularly keen to see the sporting facilities, and was impressed with the 8-lane competition pool and 100-station fitness centre.
John said; "I congratulate the Council on building this for the local community. There was nothing like this when I was younger, a place where you could come and access so many services in one place."
The first of the Council’s three new integrated centres, The Eltham Centre offers Council, leisure and learning facilities all under one roof in the heart of the town centre.
