Voting and elections
Who can register to vote?
First-time voters and students
Voting for the first time doesn't have to be daunting. The process is simple - in fact, the biggest thing that stops people voting is not being on the register.
Make sure you don't get caught out by ringing the electoral office on 020 8921 5183 or email
elect@greenwich.gov.uk
. It can take up to seven weeks to register so it pays to have this sorted out as soon as possible.
And remember, if you are not on the register you can't vote, which means you won't have a say in how your local borough, your country or even Europe is run.
Registering for students
You can be registered to vote at your normal home address, even if you are temporarily away. You may be on an educational course and living away from home, but you can stay registered at your home address.
You could also register at your term-time address as well as your normal home address. If you live on a campus you may find this has been done for you by the college or university.
However, if you are registered at two addresses you are not allowed to vote twice in the same election.
