If I need help to vote, who can help me?

If you are blind, have another disability that prevents you from voting, or you are unable to read, you can ask the presiding officer to mark your ballot paper on your behalf.

Alternatively, you may prefer to bring a companion to help you mark your ballot paper. In this case, you must tell the presiding officer in advance and your companion must complete a written declaration that he or she is qualified to mark your paper.

In order to qualify, your companion must be:

  • A member of your immediate family and 18 years or older, or
  • An elector at the particular election
  • He or she is not allowed to help more than one other voter with disabilities at the same election
If you are unlikely to be able to get to the polling station on polling day you can apply to vote by post, or appoint a proxy voter to vote on your behalf.
