Guide to elections

There are several different kinds of election, held at different intervals.

See elected representatives to find out who holds these posts at the moment.

Local elections

These are held every four years to elect the Councillors for local government wards. Greenwich has 17 wards, each represented by three Councillors.

Parliamentary general elections

These can be held at any time but not more than five years apart. The election is of an MP (Member of Parliament) to represent each parliamentary constituency. A new government is formed depending on the overall national results.

European Parliament

These are held every five years, when a number of MEPs (Members of the European Parliament) are elected for regional constituencies such as London.

Greater London Authority

Greater London Authority (GLA) elections are held every four years to elect the Mayor of London and the London assembly which represents either GLA constituencies (such as Greenwich and Lewisham) or London overall.

See the London Elects website for more information about these elections.

Other elections

There may also be by-elections from time to time, a local or national referendum, or elections for a directly-elected local mayor. Upcoming election dates will be listed here. You can also find election results for Greenwich on this website.
