Tema

In 2000 it was suggested that we should twin with a town in Africa to mark the Millennium.

The port town of Tema, five miles from Accra, Ghana’s capital city, was chosen as it was situated on the Meridian line.

Greenwich’s relationship with Tema has enjoyed many mutual benefits including a better understanding and awareness of the different cultures, history and language of each place.

A number of regular youth exchanges have taken place every year.

Help with technology

In 2000, the Duke of Edinburgh opened the first Information Technology Centre in Tema to celebrate the town twinning.

In July 2005 Greenwich sent a mobile Information and Communications Technology (ICT) learning centre to Tema, that was equipped with:

  • workstations for nine personal computers
  • good-condition books for school libraries
  • reconditioned second-hand computers
The learning centre is powered by a self-contained generator.

The former Greenwich council passenger services bus, converted by the council’s own Fleet Management team, was sent as part of Greenwich’s support for educational development in Tema.

When it was shipped to Ghana the bus was packed with good-condition books for school libraries, and a number of additional reconditioned second-hand computers.

The generosity of members of the London Borough of Greenwich Town Twinning Association, council staff and many others helped to make this project possible.
