Travel and transport

Railway lines

There are three main railway lines through the Borough providing links to central London and Kent. One serves several stations across the north of the borough, while the other two across the southern part of the borough serve Eltham and New Eltham.

Major roads

Major roads in the borough include:

  • A102M – a motorway serving the Blackwall Tunnel:
  • A206 - Woolwich Road across the north of the Borough
  • A205 South Circular, linked to the North Circular Road by the Woolwich Free Ferry
  • A207 Shooters Hill Road, which follows the route of a former Roman Road from London to Dartford
  • A2 Rochester Way relief road and the A20 Sidcup bypass, both of which are major routes from Kent into London.
The Transportation and Highways section of Greenwich Council is directly responsible for a variety of tasks in the borough including:

  • maintaining in excess of 400 kms of road carriageway and 800 kms of footways
  • taking responsibility for 86 kms of cycleways
  • having 96.5% of Greenwich’s 20,400 streetlights in working order at any one time
  • operating the boroughs controlled parking zones and 9 public car parks.

Public transport links

Over 40 bus routes operate in the borough, the three Docklands Light Railway stations at Cutty Sark, Greenwich and Deptford recorded just under 8 million passenger journeys in the last year, Network Rail shows a 2% increase in use each year, and London Underground reported a 10% increase in Jubilee Line use from North Greenwich in 2004/05.

Other areas of work

These include consultation on and implementation of new Traffic Management Schemes, the production of Transport Plans and Policy Documents, and input into future transport projects (such as the Docklands Light Railway extension to Woolwich, Crossrail, the Thames Gateway Bridge and Greenwich Waterfront Transit).
