Future developments

The developments along the Peninsula are perhaps the most high-profile developments in the borough, but there is a vast array of development activity occurring throughout the whole of Greenwich.

Greenwich Reach

Greenwich Reach, at the mouth of Deptford Creek, is currently undergoing vast change. The large mixed housing development on the east Greenwich waterfront is part of a mixed development that will include London’s first cruise liner terminal. The development will also include an hotel, cinema, other leisure uses and a retail development.

Maritime Greenwich

Maritime Greenwich, now a World Heritage Site, has recently undergone a huge transformation. The inspired refurbishment of Cutty Sark Gardens provides a major tourist gateway to Greenwich Town Centre, leading to a range of key sites and tourist attractions. Access to Maritime Greenwich is also greatly improved via new transport links on the DLR, and Greenwich Waterfront Transit routes and signage around the town centre.

Royal Arsenal

The London Development Agency is promoting 80 acres and a magnificent range of listed buildings, at the former Royal Arsenal site in Woolwich, for a mix of uses. In addition to new homes, the Royal Artillery Museum Firepower! opened there in May 2001, while the Greenwich Heritage Centre opened in early 2004.

Woolwich

The rest of Woolwich is under development as well. Projects are currently underway that will:

  • Bring forward Warren Lane and MacBean Street for development
  • Refocus the retail core of Woolwich
  • Develop new leisure facilities
  • Open up a significant stretch of the Thames to the public
  • Create a new park – Royal Arsenal Gardens
  • Create a riverside walk.

South Greenwich

The area of South Greenwich, which includes the communities of the Ferrier, Page, Brook, Horn Park and Middle Park estates, is set to benefit from round five of the Single Regeneration Budget. The seven-year programme has been granted nearly £23 million by the Government. Funding from other public, voluntary and private sector sources will bring the total programme value to £67.6m. It will link with other programmes including the Education Action Zone and SureStart and has three themes - to transform housing and the local infrastructure, be tough on crime, tackle exclusion and promote opportunity.

Future projects

Over the next ten years approximately 10,000 new homes will be constructed in Greenwich. Key housing partnership projects include the Millennium Village and the urban village at Gallions Reach, where construction of 1,500 new dwellings has begun.

As a whole, these historic, new and emerging developments create a cultural and architectural distinctiveness that makes Greenwich a unique place. The spin-offs these sites and developments create include increased investor interest, especially within the tourism, leisure and creative cultural industries sectors. Nurturing these sectors and ensuring local people reap the benefits is a priority.
