Housing
Greenwich Housing Services is responsible for over 29,000 properties. This includes 4,000 leasehold properties, which provide homes for almost one third of borough residents.
Facts and figures (2001 Census)
There are approximately 92,788 properties in the borough.
39 per cent of all dwellings in the borough are owned by the public sector.
29 per cent of these are owned by the local authority.
A further 10 per cent of these are owned by registered social landlords.
Housing constitutes the largest user of land in the borough, occupying approximately 35 per cent.
Our vision for housing
Greenwich has at its heart a vision for housing, which is as follows:
'In 2010 we want Greenwich to be a place where everyone is able to afford a decent home of his or her choice – a place where people feel proud and able to contribute to the life of their local community.'
The Housing Department supports the Council’s vision and values. We aim to ensure:
a diverse and active community
access to good quality housing
a clean, pollution-free and well-tended environment
reduced crime and a greater sense of security and protection of the vulnerable
services which represent good value for money
effective partnership working.
Yearly spend
The directorate spends £140 million a year on housing. This is paid for from the following sources:
Rents - £91 million
Government subsidy - £20 million
Other income - £29 million
The main items of spending are:
Major repairs and improvements - £49 million
Day-to-day repairs - £38 million
Salaries - £21 million
Other running expenses - £32 million
