Tackling poverty

Poverty remains a continuing concern in the borough. Although the level of unemployment has fallen over the last few years, the number of people claiming Income Support has seen little change.

Key figures

It has been estimated that, in 2002:
  • Approximately 49 per cent of children in Greenwich lived in homes dependent on means-tested benefits
  • Nearly 40 per cent of all Greenwich children now live in lone parent families.

Social Inclusion and Justice Strategy

The Council has worked with other public sector organisations in Greenwich to produce a borough-wide Social Inclusion and Justice Strategy 2002-2006, which includes tackling poverty as one of its eight priorities.

Objectives

Some of the key objectives for tackling poverty include:

  • increase the number of people on low incomes who access training and employment
  • improve the life opportunities of children and young people
  • increase the number of affordable childcare places
  • increase the take-up and improve the delivery of social security benefits
  • increase the number of people with access to financial services and low-interest credit
  • improve debt collection

Annual progress report

The Council’s Social Inclusion and Justice Division produces an annual progress report on the strategy which is available on request.
