Crime

Tackling crime, disorder, anti-social behaviour and substance misuse in Greenwich is the primary concern of the Greenwich Crime, Disorder and Drugs Reduction Partnership, in which Greenwich Council is a prominent partner. As a result of this partnership work, the rates of many headline crimes have been reduced.

Business, community, statutory and voluntary sector agencies actively support and contribute to a co-ordinated, intelligence-led approach to making Greenwich one of the safest London boroughs.

Crime rates

The Crime Audit Summary published in Autumn 2004 shows that Greenwich has had some of the lowest crime rates amongst comparable areas for burglary, vehicle crime and street crime.

Community Safety Unit

The role of the Community Safety Unit is to explore a range of approaches towards tackling crime, disorder and anti-social behaviour. All council departments are actively involved in a range of initiatives detailed in the Community Safety Action Plan.

Hate crimes

The Council has an officer co-located with the Police Community Safety Unit  in tackling hate crimes, such as racial harassment, homophobic attack, domestic violence and elder abuse.

CCTV

Greenwich Council is responsible for the operation of Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras in Greenwich and Woolwich Town Centres. These  are monitored 24 hours a day and have contributed greatly to the safety of these areas. The Council is continuing to seek further funding to extend CCTV to other areas of the Borough.

Community Safety Strategy

The Partnership is currently producing The Crime, Disorder and Drugs Reduction Strategy, which will outline how the partnership plans to achieve further reductions over the next three years from April 2005 to March 2008.  Although the latest strategy is not yet published you can view the previous Crime and Disorder Reduction Strategy.
