Family Learning Week

2 October 2006

Greenwich families will have the chance to take part in a fun-packed week of activities and entertainment when the Greenwich Family Learning Week kicks off next week.

Children, parents, grandparents and all other members of the family are invited along to the 67 events being held across the borough from October 7 till October 15.

The events get going with a free gala opening of the Greenwich Family Learning Week on Saturday 7 October from 12pm until 4pm at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich.

Then throughout the week families will have the chance to enjoy a wide-range of activities, which will all relate to this year’s special-theme of “Discovery”. Children and adults will be able to explore a variety of activities, from story-telling, rhyming, musical instruments, cooking, hair-braiding, jewellery-making, singing and many more.

After the week of fun-filled workshops, theatre performances, planetarium shows and the rest, the week will finish with a grand finale on Sunday October 15 at Charlton House from 11am until 3pm.

There will also be prizes up-for-grabs in a special Family Learning Week competition, where collectable competition stickers will be spread over the different venues across the borough and the winner will be the person who collects the most.

Councillor Jackie Smith, Greenwich Council’s Cabinet Member for Children and Young People’s Services, said,

“All the evidence shows that children get so much more out of school when the whole family, parents, grandparents, other relatives and carers join in and give their support. Family Learning Week here in Greenwich will give plenty of tips and ideas to help you on your way.”

The nine-day celebration of learning has been put together by Greenwich Council, Greenwich Lifelong Learning Partnership, SureStart Greenwich and. community colleges across the borough.

Detailed Family Learning Week programmes have gone out to libraries and community centres as well as to the pre-schools and primary schools across the borough.

What’s on at the Greenwich Family Learning Week?

Watch out for the “Discovery” suggestion ships at various events where you can stick on your own ideas - on the sail, the flag or the port holes - around what would interest you and your family to learn together.

Quantum Theatre will take a scientific look at walking to school with their play “What if it rains?” at Ealdham primary school, Eltham, on the Tuesday afternoon.

They’ll perform “Destination Earth” at Mulgrave Primary School in Woolwich on the
Thursday afternoon. Krazy Kat Theatre Company is doing a musical called “The very magic flute” at James Wolfe Primary School, Greenwich, on the Wednesday, which will feature sign-language. Early pre-booking is essential for all the shows.

Story-teller Anne Johnson and poet Junior Baden will be touring some Greenwich schools throughout the festival. Completely new to the programme this year is a “Discover Orienteering” event for accompanied children aged over eight at
Woodlands Farm Trust, Shooters Hill, from 10.30am until 12.30pm on October 14, where there'll be an introduction to basic expedition techniques.

Free tickets in advance essential by ringing 020 8859 8755.
