New athletics track opens for local community

15 March 2006

Local residents are set to benefit from a brand new athletics track and pavilion at Sutcliffe Park which opened today (15 March).

The £415,000 project has established Sutcliffe Park, Kidbrooke Park Road, Eltham, as one of the best venues in the borough providing high quality athletics facilities, offering an upgraded running tack, improved changing facilities, an office and meeting room.

Sutcliffe Park already hosts a wide range of sports and activities including running, football, cricket, bowls and tennis.

Cllr Vicky Morse, Greenwich Council Cabinet Member for Culture and Community Services, said:

“These new facilities will benefit both our young sporting hopefuls and the wider community.  London’s success in the 2012 Olympic bid was in part down to our commitment towards giving children and young people the very best chance of becoming tomorrow’s 2012 sporting stars.

“The upgrades at Sutcliffe Park relate to a wider Council vision promoting sport and healthier lifestyles throughout our borough.  We are improving sports facilities in our schools and have recently launched other projects bringing sports closer to young people.”

Sutcliffe Park Athletics Track will be managed by Greenwich Leisure Limited on behalf of the Council.  In addition to Greenwich Council, the project has been funded by the London Marathon Trust, The Big Lottery Fund and Sutcliffe Park Track Management.
